Question:
How do your friends or family react to
your interest in Forever Knight?

-------

Jessica Roop

They basically thought the show was stupid (they based their opinions on nothing... they hadn't even seen it yet!) and figured that anything with vampires was full of gore, mindless killings and teen vampires gone bad. I have convinced some of my family otherwise (gotten some hooked!) and some of my friends. One of my friends still tells me it's a stupid show, but most of my friends like it, particuarly my best friend. We're both hopelessly addicted to Forever Knight!

Melinda Cadarette

My sister LOVED the show! She was quite upset when they yanked Schanke but before that she used to watch the show with me. She even got our cousin interested! Now that the show no longer is on the air she is writing her own vampire story and wants to publish it! My mother haven't noticed any behavioural changes (I'm not obsessed you know) so she allowed us. Forever Knight rules!

Nik

As a lifelong lover of things vampiric, my family and few friends are used to it. As I have grown older, I have found ways to suppress and hide my obsessions and keep them to myself. Although, I have been known to explode if I come in direct contact with fellow fans.

Sharon Bauman

My family has always thought I had strange tastes in literature and viewing selections. When I was 8 years old, I began reading Alfred Hichcock books - murders with a twist. I "cut my teeth" on mysteries, Frankinstein, vampires, and anything of quality in science fiction. I was really drawn to vampire stories, although I did not act out any fantasies about being one, or emulating one in appearance, as some fans of Anne Rice do. My feet are firmly rooted in reality, but I always keep an open mind. For the universe is a wonderous place, and there are more things about it we don't know than do!

Rebecca

My husband thinks I'm sick! He's a very repressed individual who is offended by the blatant sexuality and sensual elements of this show. He doesn't see this show as darkly beautiful. He just sees it as disgusting. Given his reaction, I will probably never tell any other family members. They are more than likely to agree with him. I do have one friend, however, who understands that FK appeals to my "Dahk Sied" and understands that its one of those "guilty pleasures" in life!

Michelle Bischof

Good question! My family, especially my mother think I'm nuts. The reason is I am interested in all vampires, not just Forever Knight. Also, whenever I gain a new interest, I get obsessed, trying to collect everything I can about it. But then again, I don't have very much in common with my family. As for friends, they aren't very surprised because my vampire interest has been running for a while. I am proud to say, however, that I got one of my friends interested in the show. My grade 11 English teacher.

Cousin Chris

My family just looks at it when I'm watching a tape, and they walk away quickly. My parents refer to it as "that strange vampire show. The one with no plot" I've given up trying to convince them otherwise. My younger brother, on the other hand, will watch the show with me periodically, and I have a hope that I can get him in to it once sci-fi starts airing it again. The rest of my relatives think I'm psycho already, so they just chalk it up to that. Boy are they wrong! Oh, well. 2 out of 4 is still a pretty good ratio!

Farah

At first, my mom didn't like it because she doesn't like vampire stuff. But, of course, I am totaly addicted to the show. So she had to sit through it. Eventually, she came round to liking to show a bit, but she still think's I'm a little bit out of my mind about the show. Especially since I like to watch the shows I taped. She just can't understand why I have to watch them over, and over and over.... As far as my friends go, well, when it comes to some things such as the shows they watch... they have no taste. I stand firmly in my belief that Forever Knight is one of the best ever!

Angela Rynan

Well, my friends are generally used to me having an affinity for offbeat stuff anyway, so they're not the least bit surprised that I like the show as much as I do. My family is the same way. I work in television and theatre anyway, so I'm often doing some unusual stuff, and they're all used to it. I also have specific reasons why a show or a certain story intrigues me, so in a weird sort of way, it all makes sense to my friends and family. They know I've been doing this long enough that I don't work on or watch crap. So they'll usually have a look for themselves at what I'm into, and more often than not, they like it. Forever Knight and Xena are two shows in particular that I've gotten a couple of people hooked on (often to my chagrin), and now they're all telling me to get my butt up to Toronto and light a fire under some people...<G>. They're just as frustrated as anyone over FK's final ep, and now they're slightly miffed at me that I got them hooked. So now it's my fault, and I have to do something about it... right? <sigh>

Elysamarie

My deep interest in FK is not something I share with the general public. I might mention to someone "are you famaliar with Forever Knight?" and if they are I may question them with caution in a round about way just how famaliar they are with the series. Most of the people I question about the show are only occasional watchers or remember it from a few years ago.

My family (and by that I mean my husband, daughter and son) are all fans, so it doesn't seem strange to them at all. My 8 year old son may ask me about some of the fiction stories, because he enjoys the fact that FK is continuing... "Last Knight" was upseting to him because in his mind it wasn't really an ending. 8 year olds need to have things resolved. He is a Jr. Ratpacker. My daughter is a Cousin, and will remind me at times "Ma.. remember it's only a story?" but she's here alot herself. My husband teases me and explains to me... "Nigel Bennett... He's not really a Vampire, Elyse..." "These people on the show... they can really go out in the sun..." Yet he will sometimes take turns with me reading fiction outloud at bed time... He tends toward the Nick and Natpackish side. It's a picture of this middle-class New Jersey family... instead of gathering around the fire listening to stories... we gather around the computer.

That's why these pages are so good. They provide us with an outlet that allows us to indulge our Forever Knight Fantasies. It puts us in touch with other nuts... er I mean individuals like ourselves...

To the world I appear to be a middle-aged, first grade Catholic School teacher... Here I can be a Cousin (lite... but not too lite) I am part of something big and far reaching.

Barbara Stanley

My sister, who does not have cable TV, is not surprised. I have, in her opinion, always had an unhealthy fascination with vampires. Jonathan Frid, of "Dark Shadows" fame, was one of my first serious "crushes". What I can't seem to make her understand is that the show is about much more than just vampires. It's the story of two people involved in an "impossible" relationship. Of course, there are vampires, and their presence is vital to the story, but it isn't the story, at least not to me. I intend to make her sit down and watch at least one episode (I have several on tape), and I think she will be as hooked as I am.

Katherine

Hmm... I've converted most of my family to watching it, so they're okay with it. My friends just cover their ears, scream at the top of their lungs, and run as far away as possible when I begin talking about it. :)

Tessa Orrison

My mom thinks I'm obsessed. Whenever I mention it she always says something about that "stupid vampire". When I watch "Last Knight" and cry at the end (I'm a romantic at heart) or "Ashes to Ashes" and am sad when Vachon dies (I'm a Vaquera) she says the show is dumb.

All I can say is - if I met Vachon on the street, I'd say four words - "Your place or mine?"

Nyx Fixx

I've been offline so long that a large part of my FK Fanatic activities have been curtailed...

... Much to the relief of my associates, who are convinced that I am secretly an entity of the vampire persuasion myself, and that my interest in FK is PROOF of this.

Scurrilous, irresponsible rumor! Just because I'm photosensitve and suffer from insomnia and enjoy a certain television show! It's absurd! It's specious resoning! It's insulting!

... and I'll NEVER admit to it in a thousand years anyway!

(Feel like I've been offline at least a thousand years too. It's good to be boring the gang with my customary overlong answers again)

StephiLyn

Another good question...

Well... my family started noticing that I was always staying up late on Tuesday nights (that's when our local CBS station in Chicago ran FK) until 3 a.m. just so I could watch it. I'd tell them about the show, and it didn't seem to bother them too much, until... FK came on Saturday nights on CBS in Chicago. My mother accidently "came across" it while she was channel-surfing, as did my sister... and both of them got hooked! <G>!

When "Last Knight" aired, all of us were confused, puzzled and disappointed because the show ended in such a muddled and unsatisfying way.

So... the three of us have managed to live without Forever Knight for a year... and it hasn't been easy, tho'... until I got a computer earlier this year and found a lot of FK websites and webpages when I went online! It helped out a lot! <G>!

Our local cable company did add Sci-Fi to the cable lineup (finally), but the cost of monthly service jumped to almost a hundred dollars a month(!)... which means that we'll have to give up cable, even though I told my mom and my sister that Sci-Fi would be running all of the FK eps that they missed.

Mom said that FK was a good show, but it's over... and that there are other shows out there that are better than FK (she watches "Chicago Hope" now), while my sister watches "X-Files" and "Millennium".

I tried watching "Buffy"... it's okay, but it isn't FK! <sigh!> So,I'm spending my FK-less nights writing. I did write a couple of FK fanfics and posted them on the ficlist, and I'm rewriting a fanfic to see how it would work as a novel (with some major alterations to it!)

Hey... a girl's gotta do something! :-)

Katherine Wright

My family thinks I'm obsessed with the Nat-Nick relationship.

Reva

Let's just say they are not into vampires. But they don't know what they're missing!

Karen

My husband is the one that got me hooked. Sometimes he regrets it because I spend too much time on the computer with it. (Or so he says) But we still watch the eps together, even the reruns. Sometimes there's one or two he hasn't seen.

My kids just think it's mom's hobby. It's ok with them.

I actually felt kind of silly talking about it with my brother and his wife. She works for FK's distributor and I didn't want her to think I'm weird or hitting her up for stuff. It finally came up in conversation the other day bec my brother is working on his first screenplay with a friend of his and my husband mentioned I'm trying to write fanfic with FK. I admit I was kind of embarassed.

As for my friends, they aren't aware of my "secret life". I figure they don't need to know. I don't think it's something I need to advertise.

The friends I've made as a result of being active on different FK sites have been supportive and we enjoy a great rapport. So, I get my encouragement from them.

Navidia

Well, they all thought that I had some sort of weird gothic mental problem, that dealt too much with the morbid side of things. But, then I conviced them to watch it, and soon they were hooked.

Barb Erickson

My husband just rolls his eyes and mutters things like *he* grew up years ago. My 15 year old son thinks "Forever Knight" is boring. He likes "Highlander" better (even though the two shows are somewhat similar) because the sword fights are more exciting. However, my 17 year old daughter is a fan and considers herself a Ravenette and Vaquera. I share my 'zines with her, print out photos which have been posted to the net and give them to her, and let her read some of the FKFIC-L fiction. She was devastated to learn Vachon's lovely long locks were only hair extensions! :)

Pat Wilson

They just don't get it! My silly daughter thinks FK looks like a cheezy USA flick. I've given up trying to explain my love of FK. Hey I just love it and I owe no one an explanation. So there!

Mr. Oliver

My wife is a Forever Knight fan. I personally don't see the appeal of the show, but she loves it and spends a lot of time on the internet reading up on the show. I don't quite think she's crazy, just close.

Melissa R.

My family thinks I am a little odd about watching this show. Originally, FK used to come on in syndication Saturday nights at midnight. That's what got me hooked. I taped the few I could, and when it went off, I was quite sad. When I found out that FK was coming on the Sci-Fi channel, I begged my parents to get it. They relented, and now I have all the FK I can handle!!!

I have a bit of a thing for Canadian shows. My faves are FK (taped in Toronto), Due South (also taped in Toronto) and X Files (taped in Vancouver). I don't know what it is, but I LOVE those shows! I am a total couch potato, and my family thinks it's rather weird.

Oh well.... <g>

Carol

They think it's typical. I've always liked weird things.

Ken Sander

Being heavily ative in my local Southern Baptist church, several of my friends find it unusual at best and demonic at worst, that I am a fan of FK in particular and vampires in general.

Doesn't matter to me though. I realize that vampires are not real, so it is harmless.

Sami Swan Thompson

With great tolerance and understanding. My daughter (who refers to Nigel Bennett's character, LaCroix, as "Whitey") loves it. I've even gotten my 73-year old father hooked on watching it. And my brother. And his friends. And so on.

Foreverkngt

My husband loves The show. He sits there and cheers for the Nightcrawler!!!!!!!!!!

Danielle Goldstein

Well, my dad thinks I'm crazy, my stepmom can't stand it, my brother thinks I deserve a straightjacket and refers to it as "Things that bite in the night".

Eliz Palmer

They think I'm nuts and they don't understand what I see in the show. Mostly they just humour me.

Amanda Berendt

They think I am obsessed. Especially this spring when I was recording all the eps. I used to say I could go out, but I had to be home by 9pm to record. I try not to mention it alot around them, because I always get looks, and eye rolls.

Hey! A little obsession can be good. Look what it did for Calvin Klein. :)

Heidi Anderson

I try to share with them as little as possible. I am well aware that those who are interested in vampires include some very "strange" people, and honestly I am not sure I want to be associated with bloodsuckers or necrophiliacs. However, the best thing about the internet is that it allows me to talk with people who know that I am not a Satan worshipper if I have a crush on Lacroix. Hell, it is nice to talk to people who know who Lacroix is!!! I hope I did not offend anyone, but I recently saw a talk show with vampire people on it, and some people really think they are vampires. I thought it was funny and harmless (as long as they were not violent), but the audience reacted as if the couple were sacrificing babies!

Kate Duchette

Dad says "vampires again, right?"
Mom says "Why do you like this? Is LaCroix the semi-bald guy? I don't GET IT!"
My friends nod, smile, and pretend to listen to me!
My sister says "Screed is better than Janette"
My best friend says "Nat is the best."

Kristine Johnson

My mother just smiles, nods and says "that's nice honey" (I am *not* honey!)
My father thinks I should get a life and then changes the subject to field hockey.
One friend asked about "Forever Night" and said he thought it sounded interesting
My brother lives too far away to care
My dog loves it and writes letters to TriStar for me. She also shares the same affilation, so we get along pretty well.
My cat, well, I just call him Sydney
My best friend is a hopeless Nunkies Addict and is the only other person around who understands the appeal of FK.

Julian Luna

They think that I am dumb... to watch and waste my time with that show as well as Kindred: the Embraced... etc etc... They keep thinking I want to be a Vampire... its very annoying!!!!!!

Katie

My friends and family think I'm weird for liking the show but I don't care! It's not called Forever Knight for nothing!

Lyn Parker

I'm 32 and a domestic engineer/mother, meteorology student, writer, artist and log home dealer, I have always had interest in subjects like native american culture, witch craft and vampire lore, quite frankly my family members are fascinated in the realm of my knowledge in these areas.

Jessica Murray

My dad and sister like it okay, as long as I don't get too obnoxious about it. We watch the show, and I get on the 'Net instead of talking to them about it.
