Question:
Do you think Nick put up too much
of a fuss over what he is?

-------

Sarah Larson

Actually I think Nick dealt with his unfortunate lifestyle quite well. Being a vampire is a huge part of his identity. He wasn't fussing over any hang nail of a problem. It would be an incredible burden having to control your bloodlust. And I could not imagine having to be completely shielded from the sun for an eternity. Yes being a vampire had its perks. No need for wrinkle cream, or vitamin supplements to help preserve your life. Incredible super-human strength would be a nice bonus, and of course the biggest plus the freedom of flying. He used his power anonymously for the great benefit of his job as a cop. But none of that could make up for all he lost. Nick wasn't some whining rebellious vampire who would sit and pout and wollow in his self pity. He made the best of what he had. Of course he had his flaws, such as a major guilt complex, but that didn't stop him from really living, and loving. Unlike LaCroix or Janette, Nick lived more for others then himself. He wasn't self-serving, self-indulgent, self-righteous, or self-centered, which would pretty much describe LaCroix. Nick never ceased serving others to search for his humanity. It was only something he did in the little spare time he had. In my opinion Nick didn't whine, and moan, or "fuss" enough about the nightmare he was plagued with.

K-A

Yes, but I guess after 800 years it must get a little hard to deal with something like being a vampire, and not wanting to be.

Karen

I am not quite sure what you mean with this question. I will try to give my interpertation of it. If you are asking did he whine and pout over the fact that he was a vampire, then no, I don't think he overly did so. Sure, he did want to become mortal again, but he did own up to his nature and used it to his advantage. I think he was tired of being a vampire and succumbing to its demands on his psyche, but did he "fuss" about it? No. When he did bemoan the issue, most of the time it was to get a point across to Natalie. That's the best I can do. :-)

Rachel

He really should accept it because its not going to change. What he physically is, a vampire, does not mean he has to be a bad person. He should keep being the good person he is inside and if he feels the need to repent, then fine, but why not use what he is the do good things? One of the reasons he is such a great cop is that he's never died on duty... :-)

Michelle Bischof

I think he did. After all, he chose this alternative lifestyle. Then he starts whining and crying about how he hates himself and what he is. He oughta make up his mind. I love Nick, but he should really figure out what he wants. Having these immortal powers helps a great deal when it comes to police work (although not the paperwork). *g*

Reva

At times maybe he did but that is because no one can ever know how hard it was for him. We all thought he is so cool as a vampire but he may be extremely upset about it so in his mind the fuss is justified.

Watcher

No. He is a killer by nature, and was an actual one for long enough. Not only those who apparently approve of mankind being treated as a cattle (or at least willingly put up with it) like this show. I for one like it, among other things, because it at least allows for a different point of view. Nick's quest not only provides this story with a cause, content and overall plot, it also makes it much more deep and - sorry - humane than your average vampire show.

Kathryn Dexter

In some of the eps Nick was a bit whinie about being a vampire. Yet these to me were few and far between. Nick was always to busy, in my humble, opinion to really complain. However in tF Nick really wasn't listening to anyone because he wanted desperatly what he thought he had, MORTALITY. Still all in all he wasn't that big on complaining, he just wanted to be mortal again.

Susan Bennett

Uh..... I believe that was the whole POINT of the show. Now he wants to be mortal again, to repay society for his sins, to emerge from his world of darkness, from his endless forever knight. No struggle - no show.

Sami Swan

Absolutely! Too much angst! The price of immortality is equal to its reward. {Life has good days and bad days; eternal life just has more of them.}

Preta

IMHO, Nick would be lost without his vampirism, physically and psychologically. "Poor-Me-Vampire" is how he defines himself. He has spent centuries depending on his vampire powers to survive and without them would probably wind up dead very quickly.

He defines himself by the word vampire and has one of the most necessary vampire traits: selfishness. Everything revolves around curing him, to the conceit of believing that Nat was "delivered" to him by the Black Buddha to cure him.

If he had another interest, ie. being a scholar or teacher with his knowledge of history than he might be able to 'work around' his vampirism much like physically challenged people work around their challenges. But he does not, he wallows in the self-centered, poor me universe and when occasionally hauled out by external forces, he retreats as soon as possible to the 'poor-me-vampire' mode.

Navidia

I think that being a vampire is a big deal- so no. We all have our own hang-ups so why can't he?

Nik

I like what Geraint Wyn Davies said: "I know being a vampire is a rough deal but lighten up!" Or something to that effect. But, if Nicky boy did go easier on himself, he wouldn't be the neurotic self-obsessed little guy we all know and love.

One more note: My husband is a combat veteran. Whenever I start talking too big about what I would do in certain situations, how I would take care of certain creeps, he just shakes his head and says, "You have no idea of what it is to take the life of someone else. Even an enemy. It's not like what you see on t.v."

Something to think about. Nick was a crusader and killed who knows how many innocents for "just" causes. Now he kills to live. What a choice.

T. Floyd

Yes, I do. Nick seems to be unable to simply accept himself, and then decide on an acceptable and realistic code of behaviour. He seems intent on blaming himself for his condition, and others for his actions. Nick seems to hold himself to an unreasonably high standard, yet he often acts without self control. This gives him unending opportunities to sin and then condemn himself. He is a hedonist who wants to be a saint.

Imzadi

I don't think Nick put up any more fuss than a normal human would if caught in an undesirable situation out of his/her control. As Janette may say, he does seem to brood a lot. Maybe sometimes he should have stopped whining and realized the good effects of his vampirism. He often used his special abilities to help his friends and other mortals and tended to forget the benefits of his situation. I really don't think he whined any more than an average person does about day to day problems though.

Brenda F. Bell

Yes, to a large degree. He does not seem to have learned in 800 years that vampires aren't *inherently* evil, it's just that they need blood to survive. I strongly doubt the mortal Nicolas followed the *Old* Testament thoroughly enough to never knowingly consume blood... it's just that he's been brought up to believe that vampires are inherently evil, and then there is that *killing* thing ...

I think Nick would be a happier being if he realized that he could do more good as a vampire than others could do as mortals...

Natasha & The Wildman

Natasha thinks that he definately did!!! He went on WAY too many guilt trips. He was so much cooler when he was vamping out. (I guess its obvious I'm a dark knighty) It couldn't have been as bad as Nick said it was. There were plenty of happy vampires, just look at LC.

The Wildman hates to disagree with his one and only precious Natasha, but poor Nick's fuss is based on over 700 years of WILD Vampouts. Our hero (former vampchump?) must continue to experience these guilt feelings on his ever present journey towards redemption. Perhaps 700 years of being a Goody Goody Vamp will ease his painful flashback syndrome. Keep the flashbacks coming lest we not forget the WILD TIMES.

Natasha has something to clarify. I like it that he helps people. He wouldn't be our Dark Knight otherwise, and even though we all love him, most of us have one complaint. QUIT YOUR WHINNING!!!

The Doc

Well...it depends on what you mean by the question. Nick's search for a cure was the whole premise of the show. He didn't want to be a vampire any longer. Taking this into consideration, I don't think you can accurately say that he made too much "of a fuss" of his vampirism.

Janet Bernice

Does Nick make too big a fuss about you know what? No, in fact, there should be more episodes revolving around his vampirism, and less around the cop stuff, or at least a stronger mix leaning towards the vampire issues. I agree with N. Bennett - Nick is a vampire who happens to be a cop, not vice versa.

But less whining please, more action, more thought-provoking writing dealing with all the inner angst.

Monique

I kind of think that Nick has put up too much of a fuss abou this 'condition' because he sees it as a description of his evil. I think that if both Nick and Natalie had taken a few moments to seriously think about what is and isn't evil, they might find that actions speak louder than what he is drinking. Don't get me wrong, I am a devoted N&NPacker but that doesn't mean that I think Nick has to be mortal for the two of them to have a fulfilling and loving relationship with each other. I believe that Nick concentrates a little too much on his past and not enough on his future, just because he drinks blood tht doesn't mean he is a bad person or even evil in his heart. That's just my opinion though!

Laura

Absolutely. After all, he did make the choice to cross over into the eternal night lifestyle. He has a loyal forever family, and he can always continue to be in contact with humanity if so chooses. He should indulge himself in his abilities. Immortality is a gift. Something that should not be cast aside to be replaced with depression. Take a Xanax, Nick. Wash it down with a swallow of sweet blood. Enjoy your eternity.
