Question:
If Nick regained his mortality, do you
think he'd stay with the Metro Police?

-------

Sharon Bauman

No, I don't think Nick would stay with the Metro police. One of the reasons he became a police officer was to atone for his past sins - that of killing people for meals. If he regained his mortality, he would want to experience the things he's missed for 800 years. Since Nick would experience heat and cold as a mortal, I think he'd move to a warmer climate [such as California] where he could enjoy the sunshine and outdoors in ways he couldn't as a vampire. Nick could always make use of his police experience [not to mention his 800 years of experiences] to become a successful novelist or screenwriter. Of course, since he already has considerable wealth accumulated from his 800 years, he wouldn't have to work at all. He could then devote all his time to enjoying mortality, getting married and raising children.

Jessica Roop

I think he probably wouldn't... although he'd want to. I could see Natalie asking (forcing?) him to leave, because he's been a vampire for so long and has the mindset that he can get hit by a bullet and never killed, which, of course, would change if he became mortal.

Julian Luna

Yes I think he would remain there, but it would be a lot harder, however he would probably marry Natalie or something, and I don't think LaCroix would allow him to remain mortal for long.. but I think he definatly would stay, he was very well acustomed to it.

Reva

Yes, I do think Nick would stay with the Metro Police if he regained his mortality. I think he would remain on the night shift and spend the day enjoying the sunlight he was denied for so long. I think he would retain his position with the police force because he loves helping people -- it gives him a sense of fulfillment.

Rebecca

Wow! What an excellent question. I'm not sure. There are so many ways to answer this question. I think if he stayed, he immediately apply for a transfer to DAYS!

Would he stay, though? On the one hand, he can't just disappear and start over anymore. On the other hand, would he voluntarily do something where everyday he must face that fact that he could now be killed? Is he really the "wife, kids, home in the burbs" kind of guy? I really don't think so. Having attained mortality, after the first few months, he'd find what we all have to deal with... the hum-drumness of everyday life. He'd probably run all the way home to Daddy (LaCroix) to make him immortal again!

K-A

If he decided to stay he'd be dead on the first night. He always tried to play the hero and how many times has he been shot?? Too many to mention. I think he'd quit.

Star Allen

I think that yes Nick would probally stay with the Metro police for a few more years, though if he did he had better get better at dodging bullets. Nick really believes in what he's doing, it's more then just making reperation for his sins. He's not just doing it until he gets what he wants. Nick loves humanity, he wants to help, to effect some change, to bring people justice. He has ten times more, love, compassion and empathy in his heart then most people and it's these qualities that make him a good cop. Sure his vampire powers help but that doesn't mean he couldn't do his job without them. I think he would definately stay with the force for a few more years at least after gaining his mortality. Eventually though I think he'd want to retire and lead a relatively peacful life. After 800 hundred years he'd want to rest. He would settle down with Nat and raise a family, enjoy the simple things in life. He could do anything. Maybe he'd even go back to teaching, another job where he'd effect some change. Besides in his eyes just because he became mortal everything wouldn't be hunky dorry. He's still got alot to make up for before the big chill. No matter what Nick would continue to "repay society for his sins".

Richard Manly

What better validation of his dream to do good than to stay with the Metro? He would be risking his life every day! The thing he values most would be put at the service of the very mortals he preyed on. It would be a daily validation. And if he died in the service of mortals, it's the same thing that gets saints into heaven.

Chris Baxter

I think Nick would still want very much to be a force for good in the world, but I can imagine him deciding that the reason he was uniquely useful as a cop was because of his vampire abilities. So I can see him deciding that as a mere mortal with a limited time, that he could make his greatest contribution by making use of the one asset of his vampire life that he would still have, his memories, and returning to the academic life as an Historian or an Archaeologist.

Unless he had to _buy_ mortality he'd still be able to get together credentials, and with his knowledge, and even more important, his perspective on the events of the past, he could do some important work, even if he couldn't acknowledge all his sources. :-) He seemed to love teaching before, in Spin Doctor, and it would be a life Natalie could easily find a place in.

Or if some speculations are correct and mortality is the spur to creativity, maybe he would devote himself to painting or writing music.

I know a lot of people think Nick could never be happy or safe without the extraordinary powers he has had for so long, but I have more respect for him than that. I don't think he's stupid and I think he knows what he wants, and how it is likely to be. I think as long as he can be free of his terrible needs and desire to kill, if he can feel like a part of life instead of being isolated from it and live out his days in the sun thinking himself a good and useful man he'll be as happy as any mortal ever is. And I think that even if Nick wound up a starving painter living in the loft with Nat supporting them, they'd still be happy.

Catherine

Maybe if he had a death wish, but then again maybe he would. Even if he were to regain it he would still have to repay his sins.

Barb Erickson

If he was *smart* he'd quit as soon as he became mortal. He doesn't have much regard for flying bullets, nor does he seem to duck very often. After all, not having to worry about being injured by mere mortal means for nearly 770 years is one *heck* of a habit to break.

There are other ways he could "repay society for his sins." He's been a doctor before, with Nat's help and the proper schooling, he could become one again. Maybe work in an ER, or do research that could lead to a cure for AIDS, cancer or even the common cold! I'd like to think that Natalie would encourage him in this direction. After all, she's plucked bullets out of him before, and even if *he* wasn't thinking clearly after being cured, she probably would be. It might take a little persuasion, but the potential for saving hundreds or thousands of people in a relatively short period of time as a doctor or medical researcher sure beats saving one person at a time as a cop. And he'll have to do a *lot* of saving to do to make up for 650+ years of taking human victims! At a conservative 1 victim per week estimate, that would be over 33,000 people he personally drained dry himself!

StephiLyn

I think that if Nick did regain his mortality he might stay on with the Metro Police, but it would also depend on the state of his relationship with Natalie at the time that he regained his mortality. Perhaps she might have some say in whether he continued on as a cop. She might have the same anxieties and worries that any cop's wife would have about her husband getting himself injured or worse, killed in the line of duty. She would probably feel that she spent too many years trying to find a cure for Nick, only to lose him just as he had regained that which he so dearly wanted, that is, his mortality. So I think that he might stay with the Metro Police for a couple more years, then {perhaps at Natalie's insistance} he might go into another line of work. I think that if he did go into another line of work, I think that he would be a teacher. As I recall, he had been a professor of anthropology at the University of Chicago back in the 1950's.{Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the episode where this was mentioned.} Just thought I'd get in my two cents worth... BTW... Does this mean that I like this "Knight in whining angst" more than I care to admit? ;-)

Raissa Devereux

No, Nick would not stay with the police. After 800 years of blithely taking most weapons in stride, he's forgotten how to duck. He'd become a paraplegic and have to retire.

Nicci

Absolutely, he would. Nick is much too good at what he does, and much too dedicated to making the world a better place for mortals, to ever quit his job with the police. He has a nobility of spirit which would compell him to stay.

Donna

I think he might want to stay because he likes giving back to society. However I think Natalie would want him to take a less dangerous job so she wouldn't have to be afraid of losing him. I think this could possibly cause a real problem for them.

Mariah

Yeah, I think he would. He'd give all his millions to charity, marry Natalie, work, then retire to a sun filled beach somewhere. He would want to live the life of a normal joe, the job, the house, the kids. He isn't one to like the extraordinary.

Victoria Masters

Yes, I think he would definatly stay. He has built a life in Toronto and has made several friends there. He likes doing something good for society. It would also be his chance to eat in front of people and play baseball for the precinct in the police picnic. Nick and Natalie could also get together without any danger to either of them. If he did go he would have to go through the whole process of getting another identity. It wouldn't occur to the other police that he had only JUST become mortal. As far as they were concerned he was a perfectly normal human, if a bit eccentric. Not having Nick go to work as a policeman just doesn't seem right.

Nicole

Why would he? He's a freaking multi-millionaire. He'd go off to a life of sex, booze and rock and roll. And then he'd die. Soon. Heh, heh, heh.

Susan Bennett

I think he would stay with the Police Department, but I think he would get out of the Homicide Division. I think he might work with Youth Services, and help steer young people down the right path before they turn into drug dealers and murderers, etc.

Jessica Murray

I don't know if he would, but I know he shouldn't, at least, not without significant retraining. Can't you just see Nick back at the Academy? "Dammit, Knight, who do you think you are, Superman? Duck next time!" What he really ought to do, though (going wildly off topic) is fabricate a hideously wealthy old great-uncle who dies and leaves him $478 million. (Are those $Canadian or $American?)

Navidia

I think that if Nick regained his mortality he would be so amazed with the world of the day, that he would kind of lose his interest in it. Like how he became obsessed with food, in that episode - "The Fix" I think it was called. I think that he would be so overwhelmed with mortality that he would forget that he needs to repay society.

Farah

Yes, I think he would stay with the police for a while. It would be the only familiar thing to him if he were to lose his immortality. It could be the only constant thing for him and would help his transition to human life. But I think after a while he would become dissatisfied with his job, because he knows he is severely limited as a mortal to save as many people. He would want to go back to being a vampire. Then when he became a vamp again he'd want to be mortal, and the show could go on and on and on and on...and all FK fans would be happy!

Ann Byron

He might, but I don't think he'd last very long! He'd have to learn to avoid being shot, run over by cars, blown up by bombs, or hurt by other occupational hazards. It would be hard to change a habit of carelessness acquired over 800 years of almost total invulnerability. Just one mistake, and (sigh), that would be the end of our hero. But thankfully this won't ever happen, because there is no cure -- Nick will always be a vampire!

Marina Bailey

I think he probably would - police work is what he knows, and I don't think he'd feel he was quite finished 'repaying society for his sins'. However, whether he'd *survive* staying with the Metro Police is another question!!

Nastassia

I think he'd leave the force because once he was mortal he wouldn't want to die. Especially if he had Natalie.

Heidi

I think Nick would stay, but he would probably be killed instantly because he would not be used to working without his safety net!

Rosebud

No, I think he would do something interesting. Something that you go outside, work the day shift, and enjoy A LOT of vacations to sunny places.

Sarah Larson

Would Nick stay with the metro police if he was given his much deserved salvation? In my opinion probably for a short while longer, but I would think he would of grown weary of the night life after a few centuries. He would most likely marry Nat, live in the suburbs, and have a couple kids. Maybe he would re discover his spiritual faith, and begin where he'd started. With all his vast knowledge and experience, he wouldn't make a bad minister. Whatever he chose, it would, without a doubt, be beneficial to the human race. Just a friendly smile from a face like that would brighten my day. Anyway if he continued on as a detective he might have some difficulties dodging the bullets. Old habits die hard, right?

John Lindsey

Perhaps at first, but soon he would leave. He would have probable asked Nat to go with him, and then more publicly use his 400+ millions of dollars for charity that he did in secret as we were show in the episode "Blood Money". Another reason he would leave the police is because now as a mortal he could get hurt, and possibly be killed. There are numerous times where his immortality kept him allive where any normal person would have died. This almost happened in "The Fix".

If he did go off with Nat he might have started a family, and with all his dough, he might have moved to a subberb somewhere where raising a family is more sutible.
