Question:
What do you think is Nick's
worst flaw and best quality?

-------

Sharon Bauman

Ah, where do I begin? Don't bite me for this, but I think Nick's worst flaw is his desire to be mortal again. His wanting to become mortal again gives rise to a certain self-loathing, which is unbecoming for Nick Knight. He doesn't like what he is, and therefore cannot see many of the good qualities he does possess. His desire to be mortal also colors the way he sees his friends - both vampire and mortal. He loathes LaCroix most of the time, who tries to get Nick to accept what he is. He avoids Janette, the great love of his "life", because she's comfortable with who she is. And he treats Natalie like a doormat a great deal - except when he thinks she can help him attain mortality. He takes Nat for granted, and won't tell her how he feels about her. I think Nick's desire to be mortal also gets in the way of his police work sometimes. He didn't let Tracy know he was a vampire, even though he knew she knew they existed [and kept company with one - Vachon]. And look where that got Tracy - dead. Not that I'm saying Nick was directly responsible for Tracy's demise [the writers were], but it's more like a sin of omission than comission...

Nick often exhibits this superior attitude about his wanting to be mortal. Like drinking cow's blood now exhonerates him for all his past victims; or being a cop does. OK, so he admits he's still trying to make up for all those victims, but he still has an attitude problem.

As for his best quality? I think it would be his humanity. Nick was basically a good person in life, and he's basically a good person as a vampire. Becoming a vampire doesn't wipe out all one's morals. One is molded in life, and carries that with him/her; all the vampire characters exhibit that. If Nick didn't care for people, he would still be using them as his meal tickets and he wouldn't be a police detective. He has shown over and over that, as a vampire, he has compassion, understanding, and emotions for mortals. Nick is a complicated person, as are all the characters of FK. I don't think I'd change a thing about him.

This is an interesting question. I think Nick's flaw is his inability to make a decision regarding his own life. He reminds me of Hamlet in this way. When I say this I mean, he is unable to make himself commit to Natalie. He says he is afraid of what might happen to her but I think he is afraid to try.

On the other hand I think Nick's best quality is his sensitivity and sweetness. Even though, he can't commit he still treats Natalie like a gentleman. Also in the episode A Fate Worse Than Death, he opened the door for Janette and offered his hand as if he was helping her out of a carriage. He still retains the manners he learned centuries ago.

But most of all his best quality is being a vampire because they are the best!

Dotti Rhodes

Nick's worst flaw.... he sometimes becomes so self-absorbed in his guilt, in what he feels about himself... that he can't see the forest for the trees or the good he does do, and sometimes slips into bouts of selfishness that aren't good for him.

His best quality?

That he tries to do the best he can, that he cares so deeply for those around him and tries to do the best for them... even if it isn't always exactly what he should do... he does mean well...

And I adore him for it....

Nah...could you tell??

Brenda Frost

Nick's worst flaw - does he have any?
Nick's best quality - his charm, looks, tenderness, caring, etc.

KiloNyte

Flaw? What flaw? :> His best quality is probably his kindness, I mean once he decided to atone he's never been mean to anyone, not even bad guys. Either that or his gentleness. He tries so hard not to hurt anyone, and he's always so trustful. And he's not bad looking either!

Amanda Berendt

Nick's worst flaw is that he always tried to be physically human. Of course this is important, but I think he was always emotionally/spiritually human and that is what really counts. So that is what would also be his best quality - his humanity. (Many times, he had more humanity than some mortals.)

John Lindsey

I think that Nick's worst flaw has to be his constant naiveness. He is always so trusting of everyone, even LaCroix. And it is this trust, amoung other things that always giving him and the others around him so much pain.

For his best quality, I'd say it would have to be his "resurgent goodness" as LaCroix called it. It allowed him to surive the actions of Divia, save the lives of an unknown amount of mortals, and if he was killed at the end of Last Knight, be forgiven for the sins he commited before he regained his morals after he was brought across in 1228.

Stephanie Lyn

I think that one of Nick's worst flaws is that he never seems to be able to have enough self-confidence to make a decision and stick with it. Unfortunately, he allows himself to pulled in by LaCroix one minute and then Natalie tries her best to make him over into what she thinks he should be, instead of simply letting him be himself. Unfortunately, Nick can be sooo brickheaded at times, which really doesn't help him much at all. Now, before you get the idea that I think that Nick is a complete jerk, I must admit that one of his best qualities is that he has a very deep sense of loyality to his friends. I often think of the many times that he's put himself on the line to help his partners as well as Natalie. If you messed with anyone that Nick truly cares about, you would be in big trouble! I hope that this is a good answer, and forgive me if I rambled on too long.

Jill Schilling

I think Nick's worst flaw is that he blames himself for everything that ever goes wrong. For example, he takes responsibility for the deaths of Schanke and Cohen, but he is obviously not at fault. He really sees himself as a walking curse, and sometimes that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy because his guilty feelings cloud his judgment. I think that Nick would be capable of so much more good work if he would just allow himself a little forgiveness.

I think that Nick's best quality is his care for others. He is a cop because he wants to make a difference, to help people. In the flashbacks, too, we often see Nick trying to help others (i.e., the doctor during the Plague). Sometimes he falls well short of perfection (don't we all), but he continues to care, to try to help people. As a vampire, he doesn't have to "waste" the energy caring for mortals, but he does anyway. He builds friendships with mortals even though he knows that eventually his mortal friends will grow old and die (or just die, in Season 3). No wonder he's so lonely and angst-ridden!

Rebecca

Let's start with "Worst Flaw." If I had to pick only one, I'd say they way he tortures himself with guilt over EVERYTHING. Both sins of commission AND sins of omission. He blames himself for things that are not even under his control!

His best quality would have to be his humanity. He DOES have it... he just doesn't realize it yet... kinda like the Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion from the Wizard of Oz.

K-A

Worst flaw is he is so clueless. He never sees what is right in front of him, especially when it comes to Natalie. Best quality is he is sensitive.

Cathy

His best quality if his humanity and conscience. His worst quality is his lack of a sense of humour. After 800 years, you would think he would see more humor in the ironies of life. His lack of self-acceptance is sometimes aggravating, but we all have at least two sides to our natures that are usually warring with other. This is also very human, and, I feel comes under best and worst.

Brenda Frost

Well, it seems that the consensus is that Nick's bad habit is blaming himself too much. I guess his sense of responsability is one of the qualities that I admire about him. It adds to his compassionate character. Today everybody is giving reasons for why they aren't or can't be held responsible for their actions -t hey want to blame everyone else. Nick could blame LaCroix for his problems, but he doesn't. I find Nick's sense of responsability refreshing. Too bad there isn't more people in the real world that would take responsibility for their actions. But I guess that too much of a good thing can be detrimental. And he does on occassion get carried away with his self-imposed guilt.

Denese aka Knight Flyer

Worst flaw? Feeling guilty for NOT being what/who he wants to be. He is what he is, he can temper the 'instincts', but he can not change his state.

Best quality? His concern/compassion for his 'fellow man'. He, despite being a 'carnivoire', is a very caring individual.

Apache

Nick's worst flaw is something a lot worse than simply blaming himself for things he didn't do. I mean, gee, that's a shame, maybe even a personality defect, but not a "worst flaw." My personal vote seems to be split between thoughtlessness and self-pity. Neither of these has entire possession of his character, but both manifest themselves often enough to cause trouble that is frequently fatal to mortals around him.

Best quality? Resilence might be a name for it. Maybe even faith. No matter how badly he screws up, he scrapes up enough character to try again, to try do things better the next time, and he really does want to be a positive force in the worlds he inhabits, both mortal and vampire.

Bob

Nick's best quality is that since the 1890's in Paris (Love You to Death) he has not killed anyone. He states that LaCroix actually did him a favour by "showing me the hypocrisy of killing only the guilty". Since then he has devoted his "life" to trying to "repay society for his sins".

His worst flaw is that he allows LaCroix to torture him as if this was part of his process of atonement. At times he is far too accepting of LC's bullshit and his torments. It's as if his sense of guilt forces him to put up with too much.

Richard Manly

Nick's worst flaw is his self-absorption and his best quality is his self-denial. His worst flaw leads him to sacrifice others for his own sake and his best quality puts his special gifts to serve others. All that and a dry sense of humor. What a guy.

Sarah Larson

I think Nicola's worst flaw would have to be his overwhelming guilt issues. Because of his guilt he obliviously hurts others around him by keeping such a safe distance from those who wish to be close to him. His good qualities obviously overide the bad. I think his best quality is very human like compassion, humility, and sincerity. He really makes a tremendously positive impact in the world. He's always counteracting the violence that surrounds him. Having super strength, speed, and sense capabilites would also be a major benefit.

Star Allen

Nick's worst flaw and best quality? There are just so many it's hard to choose. I think Nick's worst flaw though is his inability to show his love for those who matter most to him (point in reference, Natalie). It's fear that keeps him from admitting and then acting upon his emotions. Fear of hurting those he loves and ultimately I think Nick is subconsciously afraid of being hurt himself. After centuries of enduring the manipulative and sometimes violent relationships with LaCroix and Jannette it's hard for him to trust in people and his own feelings. It was easier for him to do this with Schanke, one of the only true friends Nick's ever had, because there wasn't as much on the line as there as with Nat, so to speak. He builds walls around himself with his guilt and anguish and then rationalizes it, convincing himself he is only protecting her. As for his good qualities I have to say it's his incredible compassion and dedication to helping people. He's amazing. He always tries to be understanding of what people are going through and comforts those who have been through hell. The shame is even this at times can be over shadowed by the flaw I spoke of above. Why does he always have hugs and kisses for strangers but never the people he loves. For GOD's sake he waits tell Nat pratically has a break down before he'll touch her! He didn't express any interest (not really) in Nat until she'd found someone else, even if the man of choice was a serial rapist, and didn't utter anything close to 'I love you' till she almost died. Just like a male! This boy needs to go on a magor spiritual journey and explore his feelings. I don't care if it sounds corny, it's true! Wake up and smell the coffee Nick!

Susan B.

Ditto me on everything Star Allen said.

Marie

Well, being a N&NP, I'd say his worst quality is that he doesn't show his love for Nat enough. His best quality is that he is a guy that tries to get along with everyone and is just all out nice.

Revenge164

I think his worst flaw is that he doesn't give in to his hunger and sexual desires once in awhile. I think his best is that he doesn't give in and that makes him so sexy. And that he always wants to help.

Victoria Masters

I can't stand it when Nick is contantly forgetting to thank the people who help him with either a case or with his quest to become mortal again. He should show his appretiation more often. I do, however, admire the way he keeps hope even when LaCroix is around. If Nick ever looses hope the story would never be the same.
