Question:
What do you think would happen if vampires
openly revealed their existence to humans?

Let's just say the world would never be the same. It would be like one of the monsters from your nightmares come to life. But that is only for people who aren't vampire fans...

For those of us who are... it would get pretty crazy. You would have people from all over the place doing everything in their power to meet these vampires. And everything imaginable to become one. It would become this horrible power struggle... very nasty.

I'm not saying it wouldn't be snifty, it would be pretty cool, but the question is: can humans handle it. With half the population trying to become, and the other half trying to destroy... things would get messy.

Julian Luna

I think alot of people would either destroy them, blame them for deaths, yet others would most likely want to become one too.

Ken K Kapoor

Butthead: Uh-uh-huhuhuhuhuhuh..Uh-It'll suck. uh-huhuhuhuhuhuhuh.... Beavis: Yeah! Heh-heheheheheh...Yeah!-heheheheheh!

Reva

I think there would be absolute anarchy. Unfortunately, society is afraid of anything that is different. I think vampires would be shunned and excommunicated. I don't think people who didn't know anything about vampires would want to find out more about even benevolent vampires. As for myself, if I met a vampire like Nick, I ask him to move in with me!

Beverly Turner

Most people fear anything that preys on themselves. They are proud to be at the top of the food chain. If people found out that they were not at the top, but only a link in the chain, then they would fight to gain or regain that status.

To make this long story short vampires would be eradicated.

Bryan Kieft

I think there would first be mass hysteria with persecution, and then when the humans have things "under control" they would either be hunted like criminals or persecuted worse than any minority before. A few humans who loved vamps (or the idea of immortality) would be involved in power struggles. There would also be a few vampires that would be partially safe by becoming powerful in money, politics, and over people in general.

Annette

The Scientists of the world would probably want to do all kinds of experiments on them trying to rationalize their existence. The government would probably try and isolate them from the general population and hunters would probably hunt them for sport. If they made their existence known to humans they probably wouldn't survive for very long.

Ellen Ashton-Haiste

I think they would be opening themselves up for genocide!

The number of mortals who would accept them, allow them to cohabit this planet, would be far outnumbered by the scared and angry mobs, led no doubt by the religious fanatics hollering about devils and evil, doing a pretty good recreation of the Salem witch hunts.

It would no doubt boost the economy as manuracturers of pointed wooden stakes, silver bullets, gold crosses of every shape and form (no to mention garlic supplements) would multiply like rabbits, along with stores on every corner to sell these implements of vampire destruction.

This was a fun question to answer <VBG>. It's good not to have to tax the brain too much after the recent, somewhat-exhausting seasonal festivities!

Risa Chayil

Gosh..... seeing as how they've already been on HBO and so many of them have homepages, I'd have thought they already had! (sorry, couldn't resist :))

Dotti Rhodes

Are you kidding? There would be a vigilante group out sooo fast to destroy them it would make your head swim. Of course there would be a group of us normal, level headed people, but you know humans, screwed up from the get-go....

Rene Petersen

They'd be arrested in New Orleans for killing in Flordia?

K-A

WAR!!!!!!!!

People would just go crazy and total chaos would happen.

Sharon Bauman

If humans knew vampires existed, several things would happen:

[1] Organized religions would call it an abomination and call for the mass destruction of vampires - like they did with the Salem witch trials.

[2] Scientists and the government would try to capture as many as they could to experiment on them and see what makes them immortal. Scientists because they dislike phenomena that defy logic and natural laws; and government because they would make the almost perfect soldiers.

[3] Rich people would do anything they could to become immortal themselves, because rich people can buy anything, and this ensures health, wealth, and longevity.

[4] Desperate people would seek out vampires to cure their ills [by becoming vampires] and people with vampire fetishes would seek them out to fulfill their fantasies about becoming vampires themselves. The sane, rational people would either accept vampires as part of nature or reject them because they could not comprehend how nature could produce such creatures.

And I'd seek a vampire out in the hopes he/she would bring me across because I'm extremely intrigued about the whole phenomenon and what it's like! Besides, I'm a night person myself!

Happy new year to everyone, and watch out who bites you or lusts after your neck. You never know ...

Scarlett

If Vampires openly revealed their existence, all hell would break loose.

You would have the government studying and/or trying to eliminate as many as possible. They would be either interested in finding a way to take advantage of the longevity factors (of course the government would only use that information for politicians and the obscenely rich...). The reasons that they would be interested in "eliminating" vampires would be control issues.

The obscenely rich would be interested in the vampires also. They would be out trying to "buy" bites from the point of view of their greed.

Then there would also be the evil persons interested for the same purposes as governments and the obscenely rich.

But there is also the possiblity that many terminally ill people would consider this a possiblity of how to live, too. People with diseases like cystic fibrosis, multiple slerosis, etc.

Now I have a question for you: Are vampires susceptible to AIDS?

Barbara Steele

A vampire hunt would insue making the Spanish Inquisition appear to be a garden party.

Julie Heggemann

I think the same thing anything happens when something new is discovered. We try to dissect it! We study it to death.

Jason J. Schnell

Widespread panic. There would be a religious resurgance against them. Salem witch trials revisited. I'd enjoy it! :)

Virginia

If vampires were to reveal themselves, I believe there would be alot of prejudices and acts of discrimination. I can see people scared and accusing everyone of being a vampire. Something probably very simular to the Red Scare.

Samantha

War. All out, no holds barred, total war. With the Technological advancements that have been made, Humans have an advantage over vampires. To reveal their existence would mean their destruction.

Leslie

If vampires openly admitted their existence to humans I think that at first the government and people would try to destroy them out of fear until there was only a few left. Maybe a hundred or more. I mean we say we are a civilized people but look at our past. We killed and treated blacks as if they weren't human. When they finally got their freedom we still treated them as bad if not worse for beating us. Then we tried to wipe out the entire Indian civilization. Then in the early 1900's we treated immigrants the same way so I think the government and people would either try to destroy them or do experiments on them.

Michelle David

The interesting thing is that the question asks, *openly*. Why in (pardon) God's name would they openly reveal themselves?

If it was uncovered, though (say, through video footage or killing of a vampire complete with burning to death), after the initial shock and/or denial, we would have Chaos. Paranoia, agression, killing, etc. would occour. Eventual genocide of the vampire race - except for the unfortunate (again pardon) souls captured for goverment testing - or even worse, weakened and kept as an object of amusement. Not to mention the hordes of people with vampire fantasies who would track down vampries and attempt to be brought across. They would be either brought across (from the vampires fear of annihilation), or killed, resulting in even more unnecessary deaths. Most likely, the discovery of vampires among us would be an imfamous time in history.

Richard Manly

The same thing would happen if humanity discovered vampires that happened when Spain discovered Mexico and Peru or when the United States found gold in Sioux country; vampires, Incans and Aztecs, all wiped out.

Susan Fox-Davis

Just what the world needs, a new oppressed minority. I foresee mass stakings, pogroms, "genetic cleansing," humanitarian outcry, equal rights for the undead movements, maybe some new holidays and college courses.

Watcher

There are two versions of what would happen. The first one - cinematic (or rather TV-ish) - is already quite fully described in previous answers: mass hysteria, governmental experiments, witch hunt, re-birth of inquisition, etc. In reality, however, most of the hype would go on in the media. Many of the audience (if not the majority) would go like as if all this rubbish about UFOs and yeti wasn't enough and go on with their lives. Believers, in turn, would - depending on their views - either gather at anti-vampiric meetings and demonstrations with little or no effect, or form societies for the equal rights of the vampires. There would be also thrill-seekers going to the noted vampire-gathering places to get their adrenaline pumping (pun intended) - often even without protection means like crosses and garlic, as otherwise there's no fun in it (climbing with no safety, anyone?) The only things of all those listed above that would really happen are in my opinion a/ trade of "life bites" b/ attempts by power-hungry, gothic-thinking and terminally ill (or their relatives) with no sufficient means to get those bites for free; c/growth of "anti-vampiric protection" industry. Religion - at least in Western countries - would be hardly in power to do anything equal to Salem trials about it (though some sort of Jihad could start in the East); there'd be mostly debates and maybe Salvation Army-like efforts to bring "lost souls" to their senses i.e., back to mortal existence. Altogether, it would result in some kind of uneven neutrality with occasional clashes.

Oh yes... government. They would most likely publicly deny the whole fact, secretly trying to use its benefits. I don't think capturing and dissection in the labs would be the main way to do it, though; bribes and all sorts of corruption (including plain straight hiring) would be at least equally (if not more) popular with the authorities. There are assassins working for all kinds of governments after all - why not vamps? As for scientists... this is the only group except for journalists which might truly go mad over discovery like this. Not all of them, of course - many would see this as a threat for their positions and theories and would try to cover it up as hard as any government. But the others would give their necks for experiment just like that. Then there would be Kevorkian-like doctors... a lot could happen in this particular field.

Rachel

Nobody (exept total vampire fans) would believe them. If they kept on insisting they were vampires, they might get locked in a loony bin. There they would either starve to death, or kill the attendants and escape.

(Wonder if there really are vampires...)

Farah

If vampires openly revealed their existense to humans I think there would be a gruesome witchunt not unlike the Salem witch trials. If vampires revealed their existence to humans openly, I think it would mark the end of vampires all together. Unless there was a way to convince humans that vampires were needed. It reminds me of what happened to cats during the Dark Ages. Cats were thought of as instruments of the devil and were killed along with those who people thought were witches. Cats became popular again when the plague swept Europe, people needed cats to stop the plague by destroying the rats that carried the disease.

If vampires had an important use to humans their chances for survival would be greater. On the whole though, I don't think it would be wise to reveal anything openly. If there were some humans who could be trusted a revelation would be alright. Vampires openly revealing their existence to humans would also be impaired because of conflicting ideas and stories about them. But I do not think humans and vampires are too different from each other, in fact they are much the same. Humans would not understand that there are evil human beings who should be thought of the way vampires are thought of today. If vampires openly revealed their existence, people would consider anyone who was not a vampire to be good, no matter what sort of person they might be, in other words ideas of good and evil would be made to pick out vampires instead of evil humans as the source of evil in society.

Amanda Sridasome

If mortals were to find out about vampires, I think that the first reaction would be fear and the possible tendency for genocide against all vampires. This, however, wouldn't apply to all people, since there would be some who would be interested in making friends with them, and those who might want to use vampires as lab rats.
